So i had a single tomato plant just to grow a few for lunch every now and then. It popped out some good tomatos but recently stopped making them and started dieing. While throwing it out today i found a giant worm. Really cool looking, turns out its a tobacco hornworm. I would say it was a tomato hornworm but its not dark green enough and the pattern and shape matches exactly to every Picture Of Tobacco hornworms. Anyway he now live in a bucket i put him in with some fruit and the dieing tomato plant. I dont wanna kill him, any tips on raising him and making his home better?

Tomato Hornworm and Tobacco Hornworm are from the 7 Lined Sphinx Moth. They are extremely destructive to Tomatoes and Tobacco respectively.

Don’t bother with trying to raise it, just kill it. They are a huge pest!

Sevin is what I use on my Tomatoes to keep them under control. Because I also grow Flowering Tobacco, I use this poison for this application too.

The moth is a large very distinctive moth with long narrow wings. They are nocturnal, and some species have been know to be the size of humming birds. The class known as Hawk Moth’s, they hover and feed on night blooming plants such as Tobacco, some Cacti, Morning Glories, and a few other plants of this type.

The colors on the moths are actually quite striking. Most of the time the Moths occur in early to mid-May, but have a short livespan of about 2 to 3 weeks. USDA classifies these as a pest.

The caterpillar’s, which will infest plants are totally destructive, and will eventually kill a tomato plant if left uncontrolled or unchecked.

Good Luck!
