What are some tips for starting Tobacco Pipe Smoking?

Alright I already smoke so don’t give me a smoking lecture. But I want to start smoking pipes. What is a good kind of pipe to buy for a starter? I heard corncobs are good becasue they are easy to maintain and hold flavor good, but are there better ones, preferably as cheap as possible? And what accessories are necessary to buy with a pipe? And what else does a beginner need to know?

Have you smoked a pipe before? There are a massive number of different blends out there. Some you will like, others you won’t. It’s a matter of personal taste.

Cobs smoke wonderfully. They are cheap and if you drop one you don’t have to worry about damaging a $300 pipe. The same people that make the cobs also make a wooden one but they stain the inside of the bowls which gives it a nasty taste for several smokes until you get it burned out.

Cheap pipes exist like Dr. Grabow and a few others. Check on eBay for used estate pipes. Be prepared to give them a good cleaning though. Also make sure you look at the pictures very closely. Some will come with teeth marks and poor stems. If you can’t see in the picture then ask before buying.

Some people find a reamer to be highly important. I use my pocket knife. Some will buy a tamper. I use what ever is laying around. My finger, a cigarette butt, a nail, what ever.

Pipe cleaners are almost a must. They are cheap though. Run a pipe cleaner through it after each smoke.

Don’t huff and puff on your new pipe like you are a steam engine going up hill. Slow and easy is the way to go. Some blends will bite you like a gator while others will let you smoke much more aggressively. Blends that are mostly made up of burley are easy going but you may experience the ‘burley bitters’ near the bottom of the bowl.

Don’t overlook the common drug store tobacco. Blends like Prince Albert, Sir Walter Raleigh and Carter Hall hold a special place in my heart and I smoke them just as often as the expensive blends.

Pipe tobacco can be stored away in mason jars for many years. I don’t suggest you use plastic. Expect your pipe to go out often when you first start. Be warned you may come to enjoy your new experience so much that it will start eating into your pay check every week. Over the years I’ve spent many thousands of dollars on my habbit. You should also be aware that tobacco prices usually don’t go down, they go up. As a hedge against this I’ve stored away more than a hundred pounds of tobacco now. Much like winesome tobaccos age very well.
